Inspirations for eating out(side)
As much as cooking can be a joy all year round, summer is the perfect time to switch things up and approach meal prep differently
This is just a jumping off point, featuring things available right here at the bakery.
Supplies:
- To be clear, in practice I’m a minimalist when it comes to prep and rarely bring more than the very most essential items. This is more out of haste than anything else though, and having everything you need feels great when you’re out. In other words, your pack list will likely be more fleshed out than mine. ☺️
- Blankets / beach towels, enough for food and people
- Napkins
- Knife and cutting board (a small knife and cutting board are all that’s needed)
- Bowls and utensils for eating and serving (I love enamel bowls for this purpose)
- Food and drink! (plus an ice pack or two to keep the cold things cold)
- Extra water to rinse hands (and dishes!)
Procurements:
- Bread, buns or crostini – Crusty and hearty, lofty and light, or all sliced up into the perfect crunchy dipper, we’ve got you covered in this department.
- Dips, spreads and the like – We always have numerous “toppers” for your bread, from house made hummus, and basil pesto, to more unusual but equally fitting for the purpose roasted carrot parsnip dip and herby lemony zhoug.
- Proteins – a selection of cheeses as well as fancy tinned fish are always in stock too.
- Vegetables – We stick with the seasons. Right now we have carrots, asparagus, radish, cilantro, salad greens and arugula, but expect these offerings to shift with the harvest. Asparagus is good raw, but a quick roast of steaming make them an even better salad topper!
- Finger foods – Bring along a bag of our maple toasted pecans to top your salad, or just snack on while you put your meal
- Something sweet – Carrot cake, cookies and other treats are always on hand. Come on the weekend for a much wider selection!
- To Drink! – So many choices, too many to list, but seltzers, kombuchas, sodas and even milks, an ice cold drink awaits.
- Good attitude and flexibility – These are helpful in all situations, but essential when dining outdoors. The unplanned almost always happens, but that needn’t ruin your time, in fact the days things go “wrong” can be the most memorable and rewarding.
ENJOY!
